The Link Between Food Systems and the Climate Crisis
The connection between food systems and the climate crisis is deeply intertwined. Food production, processing, transport, and consumption all contribute to climate change — and in turn, climate change profoundly affects how and what we eat.
Industrial agriculture plays a major role in greenhouse gas emissions, driven by practices such as intensive livestock farming and the use of synthetic fertilizers. The conversion of natural ecosystems into agricultural land, particularly for monocultures or livestock, further disrupts carbon storage and undermines natural regulatory processes. Deforestation, draining wetlands, and clearing grasslands all release large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, accelerating global warming.
Tackling the climate crisis requires systemic changes across food production, consumption, distribution, and waste management. Agroecology offers a pathway for countries to meet both climate adaptation and mitigation goals through transformative, nature-based approaches.
The Agroecology Coalition at COP 30
We’re proud to announce our participation in COP 30, taking place in Belém, Brazil (10–21 November). Our delegation — composed of members from the Secretariat, partner organizations, and countries — will advocate for the transformation of food systems through agroecology as a central strategy to address climate change.
